Similar to the rest of the world, Dave Ghrol’s life came to a stop when the world went into lockdown due to Covid-19. In the trailer for his forthcoming book The Storyteller, Grohl details that he had nothing to keep himself busy which is quite rare.

“I’ve always been creatively restless so I thought I would spend my time writing these short stories for an Instagram page.”

“In doing that I fell in love with writing and I thought you knowwhat, maybe I’ll just write a book without realising how gargantuan of a project it would be.”

The 52-year-old’s “Dave’s True Stories” Instagram page has accumulated over 600 000 followers. In one of the first posts of the page, Grohl shares that his mother was an English teacher and his father was a speechwriter so he has decided to go against any grammar and punctuation rules.

“Narrowing down the stories to put in this book was the biggest challenge. I could write an entire book about the band Scream. I could write an entire book about my time in Nirvana. The idea was to choose the stories that best describe what it’s like to be behind the curtain and on the inside of the music.”

In anticipation of the book, Grohl shared an excerpt of The Storyteller that is set to be released worldwide on 5 October. The chapter he shared is titled Tracy is a Punkrocker. Grohl shares the story of his life-long friend Tracey who he later considered a cousin.

True Storyteller will be available for South Africans online on Loot.
