Judging by hundreds of social media posts, South Africans across the country are slowly losing hope in law enforcement officials. People’s confidence in the South African Police Service’s duty to serve and protect, has taken another huge knock after a clip was shared of an on-duty police officer who was so drunk that he couldn’t even stand up straight.

Drunk cop leaves a bad taste in many mouths

It wouldn’t be the first time there is a video of a clearly intoxicated police officer doing the rounds on social media – and it probably won’t be the last time.

A particularly troublesome clip of an officer – who is dressed in full uniform and armed – has been shared on a Facebook group called SA Long Distance Truckers.

In the clip, the inebriated cop can be seen trying to regain his balance by holding on to a pole. Unfortunately, this does not work and he ends up stumbling to the ground.

What upset many people the most after watching the clip, is that two young girls also appear in the clip as they try and help the officer to his feet.

The clip was captioned:

“And that, ladies and gentlemen, is supposed to be the man keeping us safe… He is so drunk he can’t stand.”

It was also shared on Twitter on 10 February this year by a user with the handle, @MikeBarendse.

2OceansVibe now reports that the officer is a sergeant stationed at Osizweni SAPS, near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker confirmed the officer’s identity. He also confirmed that disciplinary action has since been taken.

“A day after the incident, police went to the sergeant’s home and seized his service pistol “for safekeeping”. It is believed the incident took place last Friday [February 4].”

SA is not happy

The post left hundreds of locals fuming. Many of them headed to the comment section to bash Bheki Cele and his “incompetent” police officials.
