Bookmakers have stopped taking bets on who will play James Bond next, as Tom Hardy edges closer to landing the iconic role on Wednesday. For those of you unfamiliar with the gambling industry, this means the gig is as good as his.
Acting credits: Tom Hardy set to become the next 007
Hardy became the odds-on favourite earlier this week before betting firms suspended the market on 007. He had some fierce competition, but it now seems like the versatile performer will assume the ‘Golden Gun’.
As we reported earlier on Tuesday, the Venom and Peaky Blinders star quickly became the rumoured favourite since auditioning back in June. The actor, 43, has been one of the most-likely to suit-up as tje next 007 in recent years, and rumours had been furiously circulating that he will step into Craig’s shoes – after his fifth and final film, No Time To Die.
However, it’s now almost certain that Tom Hardy will ‘shake and stir’ fans as the franchise’s new secret agent. Here are the other five front runners that have been pipped to the post:

James Norton
The London-born actor, who has been lighting it up on the silver screen in Britain, was sitting as the second-favourite at 9/4 before betting was suspended on Wednesday. His film credits include Little Women and Rush, and the strapping, six-foot candidate may even be considered for the role at a later date.
Idris Elba
With a whole host of Hollywood credits to his name, Idris Elba appeared to be the early favourite when Daniel Craig announced he was leaving James Bond behind. However, the Luther and Avengers actor – who has previously played Nelson Mandela – fell out of favour this year, dropping to an 11/2 outside punt.
Sam Heughan
The Scotsman’s six-year role in Outlander opened up the door for an appearance in comic book movie Bloodshot this year, but it seems he’ll have to wait a little longer before donning the famous tuxedo. At 6/1, a few market insiders fancied him as good value for a surprise choice. Alas, those hopes have all but dwindled this week.
Richard Madden
Staying in the Scottish Highlands, Madden was nominated for a Golden Globe after his performance in the critically-acclaimed TV drama Bodyguard. He’s also made captivating appearances in Rocketman and Game of Thrones, but at 7/1, he was perhaps never considered a ‘favourite’ to become the next 007.
Cillian Murphy
Batman. Peaky Blinders. 28 Days Later: Murphy’s glittering CV is more than adequate for the iconic role. He’s one of the more ‘senior choices’ amongst the leading pack, but this time, the 11/1 shot won’t be getting his license to kill.
