The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) have many reasons to be cheerful following the impressive performance of their matric students over the last academic year. The NSC Awards Ceremony took place on Thursday, which pays tribute to the most successful learners and schools within the province.
Ahead of the event, the local education department published their facts and figures based on last year’s matric results. They’ve compiled a list of best-performing schools based on their outstanding academic achievement, and a follow-up list of the most improved schools over the last two years.
Debbie Schafer is the Western Cape’s MEC for education. She paid tribute to the students who overcame many obstacles to get their certificates, and congratulated them for their huge efforts:
“This year, we not only celebrate that our indicators of quality show a sustained improvement in the Western Cape. but we celebrate the resilience, determination and perseverance of our learners who in the face of adversity and massive challenges have shown great courage and managed to pass their NSC exams.”
“To the candidates here today, I would like to congratulate you for the hard work that you have put into your studies throughout your school years.”

WCED’s top 20 best performing schools in the Western Cape list is based on their own independent research. There are a few discrepancies between their list and the one provided by Gradesmatch – who base their figures on the number of distinctions per learner. The education department look at how well the school has performed as a whole.
Located in Claremont, Herschel Girls School is officially the best in the province, according to government data. They were given a close run for their money by Rustenburg Girls’ High in Rondebosch, and Hoer Meisieskool in Stellebosch. Westerford High (Newlands) and The Springfield Convent (Wynberg) complete the top five.
This list is based on the schools which have had the highest increase in their pass rates over the past two years. The Khayelitsha-based Sizimisele Secondary School takes the top spot, showing the greatest improvement since 2016. Simunye Secondary School in Delft and Pacaltsdorp Sekondere Skool in George occupy second and third place respectively.
