As our NSC students receive their matric results on Wednesday, we’re looking to celebrate educational excellence with the best schools across South Africa. The final marks for the Class of 2019 have scaled the 80% pass rate for the first time in history, but some facilities – and regions – have done much better than others:

The top matric results of 2019

Earlier, we reported on the 18 schools which ended up with a 0% pass rate. We’re at the other end of the spectrum, here. Student Portal – who provide registration services and data for our learners – have published their top 10 “best performing schools of the year” list.

The top schools are calculated based on average distinctions per learner, with at least 20 learners obtaining one distinction per school. Some pass rates vary, and this methodology helps identify the creme-de-la-creme from the NSC matric results.

What are the best schools in South Africa?

Sitting proudly in top spot is the Eden College in Durban. They recorded a stunning average of 3.971 distinctions per learner (DPL), but they were pushed all the way by second-placed Beth Jacobs Girls’ High School. Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool – which topped the charts last year – maintains its position in the top three, and actually improved on last year’s average of 3.53 DPL.

Johannesburg’s Torah Academy and Start College in Cape Town complete the top five matric results. In fact, the latter was the second-best achiever in 2018, but their DPL average has slipped by 0.6. Interestingly, Gauteng hosts five of these top-10 achievers, and our major cities have an even-spread of these stellar schools:

  1. Eden College, Durban: 3.971 distinctions per learner.
  2. Beth Jacobs Girls High School, Johannesburg: 3.857 distinctions per learner.
  3. Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria: 3.588 distinctions per learner.
