SA’s 12-year-old Ayanda Bokaba is making her way to New York to take part in a TED-Ed weekend – an annual gathering of students from around the world who participate in TED Talks.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). It began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 100 languages.

According to BizCommunity, Bokaba is going to deliver her talk on ‘How criticism affects people’s confidence.’,

TED-Ed also invited South African Boipelo Moagi to the upcoming TED-Ed Weekend that will run from 17-18 November 2018 in New York, US.

Both are members from Think Ahead’s TED-Ed Club.

Clubs like Think Ahead’s have chosen a select group of passionate student speakers to present their TED-Ed Club talks live on the TED stage:

“The Think Ahead TED-Ed Club ran a 13-week public speaking curriculum prepared by TED to help participants from schools across Gauteng discover and develop their ideas to deliver their own TED-style talk,” reports BizCommunity. “During the event at TED’s New York headquarters, participants will share inspiring performances, participate in hands-on workshops, and attend sessions of TED Talks. They will also deliver their talks in a newly created theatre housed at TED’s New York headquarters.”

A video uploaded by Think Ahead shows Bokaba blends personal experience with humor to describe how criticism affects people’s confidence.

In the video, she explains the meaning of criticism:

“It is the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on your mistakes and wrong-doings.

“Treat people how you want to be treated,” she continues. “But it is not just that. It is about being confident enough to stick up for yourself when someone does criticize you.”

She goes on to mention three ways in which a person can be more confident.

“You have to believe. Otherwise, you won’t be motivated enough to continue your journey.

“Know you are doing this for you. You can dress how you want, you can talk how you like and you can be your own person.

“Remember to smile and constantly give yourself pep-talks.”
