The Multitude

Everard Read London presents Southern Aspect – a group exhibition of work by exceptional contemporary artists living and working in South Africa and the Diaspora.

The show represents a vibrant art-making community working in a wide range of media in innovative and authentic ways. Southern Aspect is a celebration of this rich diversity and talent and includes paintings and sculpture by artists at the peak of their powers, as well as those beginning to make their mark.

Some of the highlights

Highlights include a majestic, elevated leopard in bronze by Dylan Lewis; satirical sculpture by Brett Murray, South Africa’s “dark prince of South African pop (art)”*; oil paintings by Claude Jammet, which explore the rituals of Christianity (in particular, French Catholicism) from an agnostic and feminist perspective.

Ricky Dyaloyi

Beth Diane Armstrong, winner of South Africa’s prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2017, presents one of her signature stainless steel and bronze trees. Phillemon Hlungwani returns to the etching press – his first love and whose arcane and ancient skills he has mastered like few other contemporary artists.

Southern Aspect includes paintings by Ricky Dyaloyi, dubbed the “shaman of the everyday” by writer and cultural theorist, Ashraf Jamal; hard-edged abstract works by Cape Town-based artist, Andrzej Urbanski and delicate bronze sculptures by Arabella Caccia in ultramarine blue and cadmium red.

Emalie Bingham

Two artists showing for the first time at Everard Read London are Kilmany-Jo Liversage, whose portraits challenge the conventional boundary between fine art and street art; and Emalie Bingham, whose striking compositions, created from her hand-drawn designs, are edgy, satirical and self-reflexive.
