First Thursdays: Visit these must-see art exhibitions in Johannesburg

‘First Thursdays’ – every art aficionado’s must-attend event on the first Thursday of every month – will take place on 6 May in Johannesburg.

If you have ever attended a First Thursdays event, you know that it is vital to have a plan of action when attending the various art exhibitions. Here is a list of the top galleries and artists to look out for in Johannesburg this month of May.

EDG2020

Two solo exhibitions will be taking place at EDG2020. The artists who will be exhibiting their artworks, are Marlise Keith and Elfriede Dreyer on First Thursdays this month.

Marlise Keith will be showcasing her works, titled Abandoned Bodies. This artist is best known for her mixed multimedia collages. Her most utilized mediums include assemblage drawings, collage, polychromos pencils, Schimnke Ink, synthetic fibres, as well as FW acrylic ink.

Elfriede Dreyer will be showcasing Transhipped She focuses on concepts such as utopia, dystopia and heterotopia. Transhipped has a nautical theme with a boat featuring as the focus and recurrent imagery.

Riboville Boutique Hotel

The multi-disciplined artist Fatima Tayob Moosa will be showcasing her works, titled Beneath My Skin at Riboville Boutique Hotel. These exhibitions will be focusing on the ability of our skin to “tell” deeply rooted narratives.

“My burning melting and heating integration processes utilised on tactile surfaces act as a metaphor for how experiences alter our being through endurance and patience which leads to a place of self-awareness and understanding,” Moosa is quoted as saying on art.co.za.

Duration: Saturday 1 May 2021 – Monday 31 May 2021.

Diane Victor, an artist who goes beyond the traditional approach, will be showcasing Frolly, Fraility, Fear at UJ Art Gallery.

The mediums used in this exhibition consist of drawing, printmaking, blackboard chalk drawings, drawing on stone and smoke drawings printed on cloth. The focus in Frolly, Fraility, Fear is on society and the individual and the consequences of their foolish actions. This artist’s exhibitions are popular among across all platforms.
