‘Arendsvlei’ actor Ceagan Arendse loses his battle against depression

South African soapie actor Ceagan Arendse was found hanging from a tree in Goodwood, Cape Town, on Sunday morning.

Ceagan Arendse, who played the role of Woelag on the Afrikaans soapie Arendsvlei, committed suicide on Sunday 14 February.

A statement released by his family confirmed that Arendse struggled with depression and he had tragically succumbed to the disease in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“It is with sad and heavy hearts we inform friends and fans that our beloved Ceagan Arendse passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, 14th February 2021,” said the family to Channel 24.

“Ceagan, unfortunately, lost his battle with depression and succumbed to the disease by suicide,” the family added.

The actor leaves behind his wife, Ziggy Arendse, his children, parents and his brother.

Talented actor

Aside from his current role on Arendsvlei, Arendse was known for his role in various KykNET soapies including Frankie in Suidooster and Theo in Project Dina.

In October 2020, the actor filmed a Showmax Original series titled Skemerdans which is set to release this year. In the series he plays Warren, the black sheep of a powerful family.


According to IOL, an inside source revealed that the actor from Paarl hung himself from a tree in the district of Goodwood.

“He was found hanging from a tree. Nobody knows why he would kill himself. He was successful, he was in season two and then three as well of Arendsvlei,” said the insider.

The insider also mentioned that he had shown no signs of anything according to cast members.

“This is heartbreaking, he is due to appear in ‘Skemerdans’ this year, it’s really sad. He showed no signs of anything from what fellow cast members were saying,” the insider added.


KykNET posted a heartfelt tribute to the actor on Twitter. Translated into English, the post reads:

“#Memoriam: REST IN PEACE CEAGAN ARENDSE. This weekend we received the bad news that actor Ceagan Arendse has passed away. He was a beloved actor who was seen in many programs such as Arendsvlei, Suidooster and Project Dina. We think of his loved ones and family.”

The producers of Arendsvlel, Penguin Films, said that it was always a pleasure working with Arendse on various productions and he will be remembered as a “kind, hardworking artist”.
