Gluten sensitivity can cause chronic damage throughout the body. Worryingly, sometimes the gluten sufferer is not even aware of the effects of gluten.

“It’s important to look at the nutritional value when buying food products,” says Minke Helena, a dietetics student. The main thing about gluten intolerance is that you obviously have to avoid gluten products such as pasta, bread, crackers, oats and rusks.

“People suffering from gluten intolerance will also not be able to eat foods that contain flour, but you do find many gluten free products such as gluten free pasta and rice flour, which are a safer option.’’

Here are a few signs that you may be sensitive to gluten.

Suffering from skin and nail problems

Keratosis pilaris and herpetiformis dermatitis are two skin conditions that are directly related to gluten intolerance. Symptoms include an itchy rash that can occur on your hands, face, buttocks, elbows and hairline. Another symptom is weakened and brittle nails.

ADHD

This can occur in children and adults. A gluten-free diet can reduce the symptoms of ADHD.

Poor condition of teeth

In the case of gluten intolerance, the absorption of the necessary vitamins and minerals in the intestines is affected. The result can cause problems with the teeth and oral cavity, which include: hypersensitivity to enamel and tooth decay.

Unexplained weight changes

Gluten intolerance can lead to weight loss and weight gain without any obvious reason. This occurs due to inflammatory processes at the cellular level and metabolic disorders.
