‘Another black man down’: Tweeps react as Teffo is struck off roll

Too harsh? Tweeps expressed their sadness that ex Senzo Meyiwa trial advocate Malesela Teffo has been banned from practising law again.

Despite his controversial ramblings in and out of court, there was a sense of sadness when Advocate Malesela Teffo – known for his wild theories about the murder of Senzo Meyiwa – was officially struck off the roll on Friday.

The outspoken official, who was once a member of the South African police service, was ordered to hand over his documents as a practicing lawyer.

On Friday, the North Gauteng High Court ordered Teffo to be stripped of his title. This, after being found guilty of misconduct.

The outcome was decided after 22 of Teffo’s former clients complained about his services to the Legal Practice Council.

In the judgement, the high court heard how Teffo had been accused of misconduct, fraud, theft, and misappropriation of funds.

The incidents happened prior to him becoming involved in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, where he represented 1-4 of the accused. In June, Teffo sensationally claimed that an “eyewitness” would testify Kelly allegedly shot Senzo “by mistake”.

Not long thereafter, Teffo stepped down from representing the accused. This, amid his allegations that the judge and powers at play were using “muti” against him.

And just one day before Friday’s judgement, Teffo evoked drama in the Pretoria courtroom yet again. The brazen lawyer stormed the courtroom amid the Meyiwa trial, demanding to speak to Presiding Judge, Tshifhiwa Maumela.

But whilst Teffo has been heavily chastised by South Africans in recent months over his antics, the latest news about the lawyer saw tweeps saddened.

Many Twitter users – particularly advocates themselves – claimed that the ruling of being struck off the roll was “too harsh”.

Here’s what tweeps had to say:

@thee_adv: “The striking off from the roll of Teffo will always be a sad occasion not worth celebrating. It saddens me when a black practitioner is struck. It took us a long time to get to where we are as black practitioners but it’s a double-edged sword in that he made his bed”

@AdvDKHM: “Another black man down. It’s sad but he bit more than he could chew. It’s nothing to rejoice about but a lesson to many. Don’t work hard to be what you’ve always wanted to be only to mess it up in less than a year. It takes so much for one to be an advocate”

@Urbaniologist1: “This is not fair to Teffo! You can argue otherwise but ripping off a man like this is so inhumane. Teffo must get good lawyers to appeal this decision”

@ZinziNontombana: “A whole hard-earned qualification down the drain. It’s not worth a celebration”

@Tabongz_SA: “Very coincidental, very coincidental. Yes, he had some flaws but he’s the 1st advocate I know who has given this judgment after revealing a lot about an ongoing case. Something is fishy. He’s not innocent but something is up”

@Mr_brown01: “The legal fraternity is one of the filthiest professions in SA, some of his colleagues have done worse, including covering up for murders, serious corruption, etc. Teffo is the easiest target hence they went out to finish him off”
