A painful prosthetic is a thing of the past

If our country’s current history-making antics have you feeling quite nauseous, imagine yourself in Central America around 250AD. Apart from other noteworthy events, what was making history then, was dental prosthesis.

A painful prosthetic is a thin

It was then considered advanced, but it’s a cringe-worthy tale. Imagine losing a tooth and having to have it replaced by a carved prosthesis (most commonly from animal bone) or a tooth from a deceased member of your community. If you were lucky, you may have had a tooth made from a precious stone like jade, but the reattachment process was so painful and unpleasant, requiring wiring and piercing of gums, that it was barely worth it at all.

By the 19th Century, the practice of tooth replacement had improved only ever so slightly – replacement teeth were readily available from morgues, but the wiring and replacement process remained almost unchanged.

Fast forward to 2016 where the employment of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and –manufacturing) technology has enabled exponential advancement in prosthetic dentistry. The process is so straight forward and painless, it’s almost impossible to imagine what people had to endure just 150 years ago.

How it works

  • A patient desiring dental prosthesis will have his/her mouth scanned to render a 3D digital model.
  • This model is used by the dentist to design and create the perfect replacement tooth.
  • The information is then sent to a machine that manufactures prostheses and a new tooth is created that is strong, durable and life-like.
