The best of South Africa…or not? After a video of a South African driver went viral for using a part of a supermarket trolley instead of a spare wheel to get around, numerous comments suggested that something of that calibre “only happens in South Africa”.
After The South African rounded up five classic “only in South Africa” moments, we decided to look at some of the best moments of the entire year:
During the July unrest in SA, the comedian Themba Robin advertised “SkolieOlie” – “the perfect oil to keep criminals from stealing your belongings” in response to a security guard going viral for stopping looters in their tracks with cooking oil.
Meanwhile, in July, Sedgars Home asked Mzansi to look out for a unique blue couch worth R70 000 that was looted from their store during the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
The couch has since gone viral – and is now even on tour.
In May 2021, a newlywed couple stopped at a petrol station in South Africa, when they were greeted with song and dance by some curious passersby.
South Africans tend to laugh when foreigners think wild animals roam the streets, but every once in a while this actually deems to be true. In 2020, citizens were shocked to find a hippo casually strolling through a petrol station, but in 2021, residents in Bloemfontein were taken by surprise when they found two rhinos roaming the streets in the early morning hours of 9 November 2021.
South Africans are loving a TikTok video featuring a South Africa taxi – who seemingly found its own way from the usual road.
A video of a “truck wedding” is considered as one of the best moments of the year. In the 30 second clip, the bride and groom can be seen together seated on their wedding loveseat whilst their bridal party, consisting of bridesmaids, groomsmen and several guests are captured sitting in individual seats in the back of the truck.
A video of a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier quickly went viral in July 2021 in South Africa as the soldier seemingly struggled to get into a truck.
In the video, uploaded by Twitter user Greg Davies on 27 July, other soldiers appear to offer assistance in order to get their colleague up and onto the truck. After a while, they seem to give up the task. The ordeal has left many South Africans asking what happened to the fitness tests that must be conducted to be a soldier.
In August, a group of ladies got more than they bargained for on a game drive when two bucks decided to investigate the inside of the bakkie and got up close and personal with them.
