Members of the Madadeni community in KwaZulu-Natal have expressed their deep regret about participating in looting in the area because it has now come back and bite them in the behind. Speaking to a local publication a year after the widespread instances of looting took place across South Africa, one of the people who looted a big poultry shop in Madadeni, now says that he regrets his actions after seeing what it has caused.

The man is one of many who have complained about losing jobs, having to travel far for employment, and paying more for some food items as a result of the looting.

KZN community ‘regretful’ over looting sprees

In July 2021, South Africa descended into chaos after people across the country started looting warehouses, shopping centres, and shops.

While it is now over a year later, many people are still facing the aftermath of the looting and are seemingly regretful of their actions.

According to Briefly News, members of the Madadeni community in Newscastle just outside KZN have expressed remorse after looting The Hofina Poultry Shop.

They reportedly vandalised the property and stole approximately 25 000 eggs, 10 000 chickens, 700 goats, and 500 sheep resulting in the shop permanently shutting down and later reopening 14km away.

Four people lost their jobs at the poultry shop while a few others were transferred to the new premises. They have now opened up about having to wake up earlier to travel to work and also get home later.

One person told TimesLIVE that he too participated in the looting but now regrets it since he no longer gets temporary employment at the poultry shop. He now says that the community shot itself in the foot.

Mzansi has no remorse

Many those who have read about the regretful community don’t have any remorse for them and have basically shunned them for their actions.
