The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards aired on Monday, 26 August, and music giants gathered in New Jersey for a night of legendary performances and distinct awards.

Breakout artists and legends alike were honoured at the VMAs

Everyone from Missy Elliott to Taylor Swift killed it on the stage, and the VMAs honoured some of the music industry’s biggest stars, and breakout artist’s alike as Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” earned him an award for song of the year.

Taylor Swift brought the rainbow during her performance

The performances were notable in the award show, and Taylor Swift opened the ceremony with a colourful production of “You Need To Calm Down”. The stage was overflowing with dancers in vibrantly coloured ensembles and glitzy drag queens. The dramatic performance was shortened so that Swift could debut her song “Lover”, and the fans were mesmerised by the singer’s alluring vocals.

Swift must have been glad that Kanye West skipped the awards for the cheesecake factory with his family, as this put an end to any rumours regarding the 10th anniversary of Yeezy ruining Swift’s speech. Taylor moved along swiftly, as she collected multiple awards throughout the night including one for video of the year.

Missy shuts it down with a medley of classic hits

Missy Elliot shut it down with her performance, which comes just a couple of days after her new album Iconology dropped. The visionary stepped the production up with a medley of her greatest hits. From the iconic performance of “Work It”; “Get Your Freak On”, to the original shiny trash bag attire when performing “The Rain”. The entire crowd grooved, including Taylor Swift who could not stop shaking her hips through Missy’s performance.

Missy also received multiple praises from her colleagues as she was this year’s honouree for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

MTV VMA: Normani aced her performance

Another crowd-pleaser turned out to be the under-dog Normani. She came through guns blazing and enticed the viewers. The pop star debuted her latest release, “Motivation” and sent fans on a frenzy as she twerked and vibrated through her solo choreography.

The backdrop of her performance was a basketball court and reminiscing on the early 2000s hip hop and R&B, Normani and her team put together this production that pulled at the heartstrings of her fans. The night was star-studded and a backstage pass to all the action is well deserved.
