You may have seen some of your friends sharing a throwback photo from 2008 or 2009 and reminiscing on social media about their decade-long journey.

If you have questions about the trend, fear not! We are here for you, with everything you need to know and we’ll even showcase how our own homegrown celebrities have changed over the years. For balance, of course.

What is the 10 Year Challenge?

The latest internet frenzy has netizens comparing photos of themselves from ten years ago alongside a more current picture, and everybody from the kid next door to Hollywood A-listers takes part.

It is also known as the #HowHardDidAgeHitYou and #GlowUpChallenge, and netizens will in most cases use all three hashtags when sharing their contributions online. The ‘Glow Up’ part refers to how well people have aged.

Who started it?

Well, to be honest, we’re not quite sure. As is the case with any social media challenge, we’re a little bit unclear about who started the trend, but we’re assuming it has something to do with Facebook’s ‘On This Day’ feature that highlights memories from past years.

Facebook was first launched in 2004, while user profile creation boomed around 2007 and 2008. Those of us who had been using the platform from the early years will now have a decade (or more) of memories to look back on.

How does it work?

The premise is pretty straightforward. Simply choose a photo taken between 2007 and 2009, and share it on your favourite social media platform – or all of them – using the hashtags #10YearChallenge, #HowHardDidAgeHitYou and #GlowUpChallenge.

That’s the minimum requirement. You can, of course, add some information about how you changed, what type of person you were ten years ago compared to the person you are now. Mention some milestones you achieved along the way and the like.

Who can participate?

Everyone! That’s the beauty of social media. If you’re willing to share a photo of yourself from the dark abyss also known as the past, then this is the perfect challenge for you.

While many may be hesitant to partake – I know, I know, we’re not all better people now than we were a decade ago – merely looking back at an old photo may pleasantly surprise you.
