Shalima was at a holiday home in Collins Road, Uvongo with her family when the incident took place around 4:00.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala, charges of murder and house robbery are being investigated by Margate SAPS. Gwala said that the man fled the scene with two bags containing personal belongings and bank cards. The police are still searching for him.
The rest of the family was seated on the verandah when they heard the alarm going off. Soon after that, they heard a gunshot on the floor above them and they all ran inside the house for cover.
It is believed that Shalima ran and tried to close the kitchen door but she encountered the intruder who fired at her. She was shot once in the chest.
Ramsanker’s nephew, Sameer Lockrajh, 25, was also in the home. He said that the incident was a nightmare.
“Shalima was with us and around 4:00 the alarm went off. She had gone into the lounge to disarm it. We then heard a loud gunshot, which seemed to come from above our heads. The property is a double-storey house and has an open rooftop.”
The family had to run for cover as they were not sure where the shots were coming from. “There was a moment of silence and all members of the family heard Shalima say twice, ‘I’ve been shot’,” he said.
Rita Jagessar, Ramsanker’s aunt, said that the family is struggling to come to terms with her death.
