TSHWANE REMAINS WITHOUT A MAYOR

Tshwane is still without a mayor after the resignation of Cope’s Murunwa Makwarela last week.

The multi-party coalition left the council meeting after speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana refused to remove two former Action SA councillors from proceedings following their exit on Friday.

COALITION SPOKESPERSON ON THE INCIDENT

Two councillors, Mandla Mhlana, and Mpho Baloyi have been accused of not queuing the party line by voting for Makwarela.

“It is suspected that allowing these councillors to vote was an important component in the plan of the ANC and EFF. This was to have their candidate elected today to the position of mayor of Tshwane and to coordinate this along with the ANC’s march to the council chamber,” Coalition spokesperson Cornè Mulder said.

Mulder added that the multi-party coalition provided every opportunity for the speaker to correct this matter. “This included proposing that the meeting be postponed until next week.”

The council meeting had to be suspended after members of the multi-party coalition did not return to the council, meaning that a quorum could not be reached.

Action SA says a DOP councillor offered Kgosietsile Kgosiemang an amount of R1 million to go against the multi-party coalition. In return, he had to vote for Murunwa Makwarela for the position of Tshwane mayor.

The case was opened at the Olievenhoutbosch Police station on Thursday.
