Bedfordview: Electricity supply to be restored within five days

Eskom said a cable theft incident has affected the Bedfordview substation and left City of Ekurhuleni customers in the supply vicinity without electricity. The national power supplier said it has noted an increase in illegal electricity activities in the province recently.

Eskom said it is “working around the clock” to locate the site of the cable theft, assess the extent of the damage and prepare for repair work.

“Due to the extent of the damages caused by the attempted cable theft and vandalism of the electricity infrastructure it is estimated that supply could be restored within four to five days,” said Eskom in a statement on Tuesday.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the matter.

GAUTENG ELECTRICITY CRIME ON THE UP

An increase in illegal electricity-related activities in Gauteng has been reported by the utility, which claims to have intensified its efforts to tackle the ongoing theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

Partnerships with communities and law enforcement agencies have resulted in perpetrators being arrested recently.

“We are engaging with the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) and we will continue to communicate as more information becomes available on the repairs and restoration of supply,” said Eskom.
