Creamy melkkos – A mouth-watering South African dish

Nothing tastes better than a bowl of melkkos, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar on the top.

If there is one dish that takes you right back to grandma’s kitchen it must be creamy melkkos. It is one of those South African heritage dishes that remains a winner. Creamy melkkos is loved by many and it is an economical dish that you can quickly whip together for the family. The main ingredient is milk to which you add some flour and butter.

Although usually associated with winter comfort food, creamy melkkos is a dish that you can enjoy all year round. Nothing tastes better than a bowl of melkkos, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar on the top.

So, if you are out of ingredients and do not have time for a trip to the groceries store, this easy traditional meal will keep all the hungry tummies full and satisfied. This dish is also a firm favourite with the younger generation as it almost tastes like a dessert.

Ingredients

  • 300 ml cake flour

  • 15 ml butter

  • 5 ml salt

  • 2 liters milk

  • cinnamon sugar

Method

  • Sift the flour and salt together.
  • Rub the butter in with the flour, using your fingers.
  • Bring the milk to the boil on the stove and add the butter and flour mixture a little bit at a time.
  • Turn the heat right down and let it boil for about 5 minutes. Make sure you stir the mixture often.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on the top and enjoy it warm!
