The days are really heating up here in South Africa and there is always a reason to light a good ol’ braai. It’s so popular that we even have a mid-week Wednesday braai called Little Saturday. However, we all know how late South Africans can start actually cooking on the flames. That’s why we need a snack to keep us happy while we enjoy the festivities. These Bacon & Cherry Sosaties or skewers are great, because you know…bacon.

These are easy to find in stores but when making them yourselves, chances are that you have much better bacon products and cherries that won’t fall off. You can use both steel or wooden skewers. Make sure you place them across the grid so they don’t fall through. This happens often, which is why they are also known as “oopsies” when cherries fall off. You can also place these in a pinch grid, making turning them even easier. Remember to keep the Maraschino cherry syrup to pour over when grilling your Bacon & Cherry Sosaties.

It’s always braai-season in South Africa, but as summer approaches quickly it’s time to pump those numbers up. These Bacon & Cherry Skewers are a great way to get the feasting started.

Ingredients

  • 600 g 600 streaky bacon

  • 300 g 300 Maraschino cherries

  • wood skewers (sosatie sticks)

Method

  • On a sosatie stick add one cherry and then thread the streaky bacon strips. The spacing should be one cherry and then one strip of streaky bacon threaded and then repeat. I use about four bacon strips, but you can use as much as you feel comfortable with.
  • Over the hot coals place the cherry bacon sticks until crispy and cooked. To make it easier, place all of the cherry bacon sticks into a braai grid that you can close so that turning them on the fire is much easier.
  • Before serving, pour the leftover cherry syrup from the jar over the sosaties (skewers) just as they are done.
