Sunny days ahead and you know what that means; a big braai is on its way. However, it can take quite a while to start the braai in South Africa while everybody enjoys beverages and stories. You still need snacks and when the braai has it’s first layer of coals ready, you need to make these iconic treats. Playfully named “oopsies”, these simple bacon and cherry skewers are iconic for the cherries always falling off, but also being very tasty.

Bacon and cherry skewers tips

The cherries soften up as they cook so they often fall off, but there are ways to keep them on. One way is to skewer them between folds of bacon so that they stay more secure. You can also use a pinch grill to keep them together when you flip them all at once. You can also baste them a bit with some honey if you want extra sweetness. They are best enjoyed straight off the fire and make enough, because people are already hungry.

It’s always braai-season in South Africa, but as summer approaches quickly it’s time to pump those numbers up. These Bacon & Cherry Skewers are a great way to get the feasting started.

Ingredients

  • 600 g 600 streaky bacon

  • 300 g 300 Maraschino cherries

  • wood skewers (sosatie sticks)

Method

  • On a sosatie stick add one cherry and then thread the streaky bacon strips. The spacing should be one cherry and then one strip of streaky bacon threaded and then repeat. I use about four bacon strips, but you can use as much as you feel comfortable with.
  • Over the hot coals place the cherry bacon sticks until crispy and cooked. To make it easier, place all of the cherry bacon sticks into a braai grid that you can close so that turning them on the fire is much easier.
  • Before serving, pour the leftover cherry syrup from the jar over the sosaties (skewers) just as they are done.
