An authentic and exclusive and Cape experience, the Cape Malay Cooking Safari takes you into the heart of the Bo-Kaap and its Malay community to learn more about the deep-rooted culture of this colourful neighbourhood.

You’ll be warmly welcomed into the home of a local family where you will spend the evening and enjoy an unforgettable culinary journey like no other in the world.

The Cape Malay cooking adventure

The adventure begins at the Bo-Kaap Museum, where you will learn about the history and tradition of the area through an exquisite black-and-white photographic exhibition.

A registered guide takes you on a leisurely stroll through some of the more historic streets, highlighting the unique collection of pre-1840 architecture that resulted in this area being declared a national monument.

Follow the trail of fragrant scents of cinnamon, ginger, coriander, cardamom, and chilli, which drift tantalisingly from the storefronts and cafés and shop for special ingredients to make a typical Cape Malay dish.

Visiting a family’s home

You then head to a local family’s home where it’s “all-hands-on-deck” for an informal cooking workshop which will teach you how to mix masala spice, how to fold little triangular samosas, and how to get the perfect balance with the delicate flavours of a rich and spicy Cape Malay curry.

Your hostess and chef extraordinaire will chat to you about how history, religion, and cuisine are intricately bound together in the Bo-Kaap culture as you sip a mug of faloodah, a delicious traditional, lightly rose-scented milk drink. When the cooking timer pings, it’s time to savour all your hard work and dig into a full-course traditional Malay meal with the family.

This is not only a fantastic way to spend a cold winter’s day, but also to learn about one of the many rich cultures that make up the mosaic of Cape Town, and to taste some really great food.

Your taste buds will enjoy a culinary journey through the Cape’s rich past.
