The Gauteng Department of Health (GDE) has placed a total of 268 192 Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for the 2023 school year as of 30 November 2022.

Placement process to continue until all learners are placed

A total of 135 465 Grade 1 learners and 132 727 Grade 8 learners have been placed in preparation for the 2023 academic year.

The GDE noted that it would be unlikely that all learners would be placed by the end of the day, this is contrary to what it has communicated to the public previously.

A total of 8 142 Grade 1 and 23 407 Grade 8 learners remain to be placed.

The GDE assured parents that the placement process with continue until all learners are placed.

Capacity in schools a big problem

The GDE stated that capacity is a big problem when placing learners.

These are most prevalent in high-pressure areas where large numbers of applications are received.

The GDE has decided to increase capacity in these schools by providing mobile units.

Placing applicants with no proof of address

From 1 December 2022, the GDE will start with the process of placing all applicants who were unable to provide their proof of address.

All applicants who submitted incomplete documents will be offered placement at schools with available space during this process.

Parents will receive transfer placement offers via SMS, and they can also check their placement status on the System.

The system will be open from 20 December 2022 until 20 January 2023 for late applications.

Applications made during the late application period will be placed at schools with available space.
