IT IS WRITTEN: True Worship

Worshiping God is a personal connection between Him and His Creation, us. Here’s a few pointers for worship while on your journey with God.

John 4: 21-24 (NIV)

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

PROSKYNEO

As part of a worship band in church many years ago, a worship leader came to give us a teaching on worship. She used the Greek term PROSKYNEO for worship, meaning “to kiss”. This was a lightbulb moment for me!

To know someone in the biblical sense usually denotes a deep intimacy as between a husband-and-wife eg Genesis 4:1 “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived”

Linking these two descriptions of KNOWING and being a TRUE WORSHIPER, my understanding was opened to a deeper revelation of the meaning of worship.

Being part of a young worship band, most of us thought that worship involved singing and praising God. While this can be part of it, the concept is so much greater than that!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH?

God is Spirit, and He lives in us by His Spirit. His Word is Jesus (John 1:1), and He is the truth (John 14:6).

God invites us to know Him intimately. To know His character and to know His word – the fullness of the Godhead!

As we spend time with him, getting to know Him more and more, we feel safe to open ourselves up to Him more fully, until we get to the place of deep surrender to the lover of our souls.

Rom 12:1-2 Living Sacrifice

12 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”.

Real worship refocuses our thinking and feelings until we live in alignment with Him and the truth of His Word.  It is the route to true fellowship with Him, where we become whole and complete lacking nothing (James 1:4).

How has worshipping the LIVING GOD changed you?

I believe that there is a God given longing inside each of us that only He can fill! Many turn to drugs, alcohol, sex – anything that will satisfy this unfulfilled (and unspoken) longing – like an idolatrous wife not satisfied with her marriage bed.

However, Jesus offers himself to you as a bridegroom longing for His bride. Take up the call of Romans 12 and turn your longings into worship as you dedicate yourself, holy and pleasing to him.

As you spend time worshipping Him; meditating on His goodness, and the various glories of His marvelous character, you will find your heart filled with awe and wonder until it overflows – unrelated to circumstances. Nothing satisfies like true worship.

PRAYER

Father, our prayer is that you will bring us back to the heart of worship!

Where we have put up walls around our heart to protect us from the pains of life, we ask that you keep revealing more of your character to us, so that we are prepared to let go and trust you completely.

We long to be vessels of your glory and channels of your love.

In Jesus’s name,

Amen
