The Rock Christ built the church on: IT IS WRITTEN

We know that it is Christ Himself who will build His Church, but Peter’s divine revelation, was part of the foundation.

Previously, I wrote an article about the question Christ posed to Peter: “Who do you say that I am”,  and he answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Matthew 16: 15-16). When the Lord and Simon Peter first met, Jesus had said that Simon would be named “Cephas” (Aramaic for “ROCK”) or Peter. The name Peter (Greek: Petros) means ROCK and Jesus continued in  Matthew 16:18 saying:

“And I tell you that you are Peter (Petros: masculine) and on this rock (Petra: feminine), I will build my church and the gates of hell will not overcome it.”

Jesus’ play on words here is intriguing! We know that it is Christ Himself who will build His Church,  but it would seem that Peter’s divine revelation (and hence his profession of faith in Christ as the Messiah), was part of the foundation upon which Jesus would build His church, with Christ Himself being the “chief cornerstone”:

“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow  citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the  foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in  whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”

Ephesians 2:19-21 (NIV)

“Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed  to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.”

Matthew 16:17 (NIV)

As we know, the foundation of any building is crucial to its stability, with the chief cornerstone being  pivotal. By believing in Christ as our Messiah, you and I are fitted together, growing into a holy  temple in the Lord, built on the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets.

Amazingly, God has chosen us as His body to continue building His kingdom (the Church of Christ) on  the earth. He has made no back-up plan! He believes in us and has invested His being in us!

Christ is the ROCK!

Despite being rejected by people; arrested, tried, and found innocent (but crucified anyway), it would not stop Him from building His Church. The gates of hell will NOT prevail against it.

No matter who you are, where you have been, or what you have done, by repenting (turning from  sin and to Christ), He becomes your chief cornerstone and firm foundation as you trust and obey  Him. He is the ROCK of our salvation, and He will not fail.

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock  and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will never be shaken.”

Psalm 62:1 (NIV)

“Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief  cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”

1 Peter 2:6 (NIV)

Christ Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone who holds the Body of Christ together, and He has promised to  complete the good work he has begun in us:

Philippians 1:6 (NIV) “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on  to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

PRAYER

Thank you, Jesus, that our lives are built upon the Rock and not upon the sand!

You are our firm foundation amidst the storms of life, and we will not be shaken.

We praise you Abba for revealing this truth to us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Amen
