Why ‘Uzalo’ remains the most-watched show in South Africa

The Broadcast Research Council (BRC) of South Africa reveals SABC1’s soapie ‘Uzalo’ is the most watched show with 5.9 million viewership.

The latest figures from the Television Audience Measurement (TAM) by the Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) reveal that SABC1’s soapie Uzalo is still the most-watched show in the country with 5.9-million viewership.  

UZALO’ REMAINS THE MOST-WATCHED SHOW  

The SABC1 show Uzalo is followed by e.tv’s Scandal! with 5.3 million viewership, House of Zwide with 4.9 million, Generations: The Legacy with 4.7-million, while Skeem Saam sits at 4.5-million viewership.   

E.tv’s telenovela Imbewu is on 2.7-million, the raunchy series, The Black Door, has 2.58-million and Durban Gen is sitting on 2.56-million.  

SABC2’s long-running soapie Muvhango has a 1.7 million viewership, followed by DStv’s top viewing show Gomora with 1.1-million, SABC2’s Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan with 945k viewership, and Mzansi Magic’s cancelled telenovela The Queen is sitting on 737,092.

WHY DO VIEWERS TUNE INTO THE SABC1 SOAPIE?  

The SABC1 Zulu soapie, which airs daily at 21:30 has viewers tuned to their screens with its dramatic storyline and has won multiple awards over the years.  

South Africa’s popular production company Stained Glass TV revealed in an interview with Daily Sun this week that its leading actor Masoja Msiza, who plays the popular character of Nkunzi will temporarily take a break when he ‘gets killed’ by Sbu.  

Viewers will see Nkunzi returning towards the end of August and Sbu (Masoja Majozi) attempting to run away when he learns his enemy is alive. 

The shows latest actor Sandile Mfusi, who plays a drug dealer and Nonka’s business partner-boyfriend will get busted this month as Hleziphi has uncovered he’s selling drugs through Nonka’s beauty products.   

Fans of the soapie will also see Kwanda abducting Hleziphi and Nonka (Thuthuka Mthembu) when he realises the police are onto him.   

#TeamNonka should know that her brother Njeza (Nkanyiso Makhanya), who suspected Kwanda was too good to be true will search for Hleziphi and Nonka when they disappear.   

The popular show has also made popular actors such as Nay Maps, Kay Sibiya, Gugu Gumede, and Thaboka Mnguni, who plays Pastor Mbatha.
