Who were the three most memorable villains in ‘Rhythm City’?

The final episode of e.tv’s long-running daily musical drama Rhythm City will air on 16 July 2021 and will be replaced by the new rag-to-riches fashion drama House of Zwide.

Since Rhythm City premiered on the free-to-air channel in 2007, viewers have seen their fair share of villains. Let’s have a look at three of the most memorable ones.

‘Rhythm City’ villains

1. DAVID GENARO PLAYED BY JAMIE BARTLETT

#RhythmCity on Twitter felt like the show ended when David Genaro, played by Jamie Bartlett, exited the show. Some have even gone as far as saying that Genaro’s character carried the show…and he WAS the show.

Bartlett played the loud-spoken gangster character since the inception of the show in 2007. Sadly enough, e.tv announced the ending of Rhythm City the same year the actor left.

Bartlett currently plays the role of D-Mag on SABC1’s Family Secrets.

2. CHICKEN PLAYED BY NELSON NTOMBELA

Nelson Ntombela gave the viewer’s hope that Rhythm City would regain its spark when he joined the show in 2019.

Ntombela was undoubtedly one of the most hated characters in Mzansi after David Genaro. He played the role of a gangster called Chicken so well that fans were convinced he is the character when they bumped into the actor in the street.

The 35-year-old actor told Sowetan in an interview that he’s a reformed gangster in real life, just like his character.

The character is a walk in the park.

Growing up wasn’t easy because I grew up under the umbrella of gangsters. People used to be afraid of me because of the people I used to hang out with and the things I used to do.

The actor also played the role of a loan shark named Skhali on The Queen.

3. NAOMI FISCHER PLAYED BY MOSHIDI MOTSHEGWA

Veteran actress Moshidi Motshegwa, who is best known for her role as Naomi on Rhythm City, told TshisaLIVE that Naomi was “bigger than her”.

She says the role required a lot of energy that was needed at the time.

Fans loved Naomi’s loud, psychotic, and humorous personality. They also adored her never-ending shenanigans and her obsession with Miles Vilakazi played by Peter Sephuma.

Naomi played dangerous games and would do anything until she got what she wanted, even if it meant kidnapping a baby.

The actress said the role will always stalk her…
