BEING A FACE FOR THE DARK-SKINNED

Nambitha says she takes her acting roles seriously because she understands that she is not just portraying a character, she is representing those with darker skin tones as well.

“When I did Broken Vows in 2017, I had young women and girls coming up to me saying they were glad to see someone that looked like them on prime-time TV. There I was, just doing my job, unaware of the impact if was making,” she said.

“Yes, when I came back from New York to pursue a career in the arts after leaving corporate, I promised myself that I’d stay true to myself and always remained grounded, but when girls were telling me about their stories I was moved. Some even said because they are dark skinned the kept out of family portraits and that broke my heart,” Nambitha told the publication.

“See, I understood the kind of bullying that can come from the outside because of the colour of your skin. But my late grandmother from my father’s side, uKhulu, always affirmed. She took it upon herself to tell me stories and instil in me that the colour of my skin was a superpower. I always say I am an advocate for dark skin magic because she always built me up,” she added.

ACTRESS OF THE YEAR NOMINATION

Nambitha has also been nominated for the VN Global Awards in the actress of the year category alongside Rosemary Zimu and Khosi Ngema.

The actress says she is excited about the nomination because she is getting the recognition she needs for the work she does.

“I am really excited about this nomination. They emailed me and I was able to either accept or decline the nomination. It really means a lot to me because any nod is a confirmation that you are on the right track. It feels like a nudge from God. Everyone likes to be seen and I am grateful for the acknowledgment,” Nambitha told Drum.
