Scandal actor Patrick Mofokeng and IsiBaya actress Thuli Thabete will play the lead roles in 1Magic’s new telenovela, Lingashoni. The series will premiere on 22 March at 19:30.

Lingashoni means “do not sink” in English. It’s about a poverty-stricken farm worker who returns to his former life of being a successful businessman after a decade of memory loss.

Patrick Mofokeng plays Mandla Cele, who witnesses a murder by the Joburg mayor (Luzuko Nkqeto) and goes on the run.

Cele survives a murder and this causes memory loss. He is found by a farmworker and her two children. He marries her and settles into a farm life, until he starts having flashbacks of his former life.

Lingashoni is produced by Stained Glass Productions, which also produced Uzalo, eHostela and Durban Gen. Stained Glass Productions posted a snippet of what to expect from their latest telenovela. Lingashoni will run on channel 103 from Monday to Friday.

“This story has the hallmarks of a hit telenovela series, with twists and turns that will explore the concept of family, blended family drama, high stakes, the dark underworld of crime and suspense that will keep viewers engaged with every episode,” M-Net’s director of local entertainment channels, Nomsa Philiso, said.

“We have observed that our valued 1Magic viewers have become accustomed to juicy storylines and exceptional talent. Therefore, we are excited that these two elements meet political power and crime in what looks set to be a thriller.”

Thuli Thabethe plays Mandla’s estranged first wife, Puleng, who has since moved on and started a new life with the family driver, Papi Zulu (Thato Molamu). Muvhango’s Liteboho Molise will also star in Lingashoni

“Through this telenovela we wanted to tell a story that reveals the lived experiences of most South Africans. The themes of this telenovela will include family drama, love, betrayal, scandalous affairs and crime,” Stained Glass TV’s Zodwa Zuma said.

“The last thing that everybody wants is for Mandla to regain his memory. Will Mandla remember what happened to him on the day of his memory loss?” she added.

It is not yet known if the veteran actor who plays the role of Mlungisi on Scandal will leave the soapie to take on his new role on Lingashoni
