Late 7de Laan actor’s widow spends first Christmas without Patrick

Masechaba Shai says ever since her husband Patrick passed on, life has been hard financially because Patrick spoiled the grandkids.

The widow of the late 7de Laan actor Patrick Shai, Masechaba Shai has spent her first ever Christmas Day without the actor and she says this has never happened ever since they have been together.

Masechaba told True Love in an interview, “I have spent almost every holiday season with my husband. I never imagined him gone…I have been avoiding doing any planning or preparation. But we will try to make it special for the grandchildren and have Christmas lunch together as usual”.

MASECHABA’S FIRST CHRISTMAS WITHOUT PATRICK

Patrick Shai committed suicide on 22 January at the age of 65. Masechaba, who had been with him for 40 years, found him hanging from the garage ceiling of their Dobsonville home in Soweto.

The mother of two told the publication that she does not recall celebrating Christmas and New Year’s apart with him.

“We have celebrated the past 40 years together and it will take some getting used to,” she said.

Masechaba also told the publication that she started a support group for widows to allow them to speak about their emotions without being judged. This non-profit organisation aims to help women and men who have lost their spouses cope. It is about debunking the African myths about the dark cloud that hangs over widows, especially women.

“There is a lot that widows go through, and this is a safe space for women and men at times to talk, share their problems get the counselling and support they need in order to move forward,” she told the publication.

FINANCES AFTER HUSBAND’S DEATH

Masechaba says life has not been easy since Patrick left them, they are learning to cope.

“…The kids still have moments when they cry and miss their father and grandfather and I have to comfort them and be a shoulder to cry on…It’s also been very difficult financially as my husband took care of everyone including spoiling his grandchildren,” she added.
