There’s something off about Mzansi magic’s new telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire’s production, from the lukewarm storyline to the leading cast member Mbulelo Grootboom, who plays Luzuko. It feels like the show is ending…it’s the same feeling soapie fans get before a telenovela/soapie is about to get cancelled, except this is a new show.

‘IKHONA LENTO OFF ABOUT GQEBERHA: THE EMPIRE’

There’s no magic in this Eastern Cape-based telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire as it all feels a bit rushed, from the storylines to the acting. Mzansi Magic fans are also complaining about the leading cast member Mbulelo Grootboom, who plays the polygamist Luzuko Mxenge. Grootboom appears to be a supporting role… Is the role is too big for Grootboom?

Perhaps we expected too much from Tshedza Pictures who gave us shows such as The River, Giyani: Land of Blood, etc. Perhaps it’s time for Phathu Makwarela and Gywdion Beynon to give new writers a chance.

There are some standout performances from the talented actress Zikhona Sodlaka, who plays the first wife, and his eldest son played by Tembinkosi Ngcukana.

Let’s hope the show improves as the telenovela that replaced The Queen has big shoes to fill and viewers will not be easily fooled.

“I thought I was the only one. The storyline is not nice. The way they have paired the characters in terms of who is related to who it’s bad but like what can we say?”

@ZandyNice:

“Yey I was attacked for questioning some things it’s very lukewarm and usually new series starts with a bang..but this one.”

@CeboLucky:

“Like any other show currently on air, this is what we have to deal with, poor production, you’d swear it’s the same production company in all these shows.”

@Omhle_khabo:

“Watched the first episode and I wasn’t sold… I felt like too much was going on, it felt rushed.

@maharris263:

“Phathu and crew have clearly lost the plot.”
