‘A first for Mzansi’: ‘The River’s gay couple Andile and Njabulo ties the knot

‘The River’s’ gay couple, Andile and Njabulo, will get married this December in a traditional and ‘white’ wedding.

Actors, Lunga Mofokeng and Siyabonga Sepotekele, who play gay lovers, Andile and Njabulo respectively on The River are set to get married.   

Entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela, announced this morning (1 December) that the pair will get married traditionally and have a “white” wedding later.  


Andile and Njabulo’s gay wedding is a first for South African television as it’s never happened on any other soapie or telenovela.    

Mphela also stated that their wedding storyline will tackle challenges surrounding gay relationships within our traditional customs.  

Fans of the couple were thrilled to hear that they’re finally getting married as they’ve broke up several times before.   

The production company, Tshedza Pictures, also revealed that Andile’s father, Zweli, will face challenges with their wedding.

Zweli Dikana (Hlomla Dandala) will question what a lot of families are not ready to engage in our current society.  

Viewers are hoping that Andile’s partner, Njabulo, will be more involved on the telenovela after they get married.

Actor, Siyabonga Sepotekele (Njabulo) also plays the role of Donald, on 1Magic’s hit telenovela, Lingashoni.

Actor, Lawrence Maleka, who’s been playing the role of Zolani on the 1Magic telenovela since season one will return this month (December).   

The fan-favourite character was spotted at Andile and Njabulo’s traditional wedding pictures on Twitter.   

The pictures were posted on entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela’s, social media account this morning (1 December).  

Viewers of The River were thrilled to spot him on the images as the show hasn’t been the same without him.   

The multi-award-winning actor took a break from the telenovela for the first time since its inception in October.    


Beautiful but this love story never gains traction with Njabulo’s inns and outs, let’s see how it goes this time.”
