‘I was nervous to join ‘Skeem Saam’: Actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi

Actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi – who plays Koko Mantsha in ‘Skeem Saam’ reveals why she was nervous to join the educational soapie.

Legendary actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi- who plays Koko Mantsha in SABC1’s educational soapie – Skeem Saam has become everyone’s favourite grandmother in Soapville.

The 82-year-old thespian has spent more than four decades in the entertainment industry playing different roles.

LYDIA MOKGOKOLOSHI: HER BIG BREAK  

The award-winning actress Lydia Mokgokoloshi – who plays Katlego Peterson’s grandmother Koko Mantsha in Skeem Saam, is also known for her role in Bophelo ke Sepmphekgo, and Ngwanaka O Kae.

Mokgokoloshi reveals that her lifestyle is her secret to staying in the for more than four decades and also states that she began her acting career in the early 1980s on a Sepedi drama series Ngwanaka O Kae where she bagged the role of Mmago Rateka.   

She tells Sunday World that the role was the beginning of her career after taking a coin flip chance by going to the auditions.  

“I didn’t want to tell my parents that I was going to audition because nobody believed in acting back then and our community didn’t think it was for black people.” 

“However, I knew that I loved it and it kept calling me every time I tried to tell myself that I should pursue a different career.” 

“I used to write drama for my learners and children at church, and everyone would compliment me.”

POPULA ROLES: ‘SKEEM SAAM’, ‘BOPHELO KE SEMPHEGO’

Mokgokoloshi also reveals that she enjoyed playing her popular 90s role Hunadi in Bophelo ke Semphekgo.   

Hunadi is famously known as Mmago Nkwesheng to her fans in the drama series.   

She acted alongside fan-favourite actors Sello Maake KaNcube, the late Patrick Shai, Nakedi Ribane, Podu Mamabolo, and many more.  

“Acting was not about the money back then. Now people just go to acting schools without the love but the eagerness to be famous and have a lot of money.  

“If this is the mindset that our future actors have then most of them won’t last for long on our TV screens.  

“Like any industry, acting demands love and appreciation,”

Mokgokoloshi also admits that she was nervous and worried when she joined SABC1’s youth soapie, Skeem Saam, because the storylines are focused on the youth.   

She was relieved when the cast enjoyed what they did and felt excited to have veteran actresses like herself in the studio.
