DECONSTRUCTING DRAKE & THE WEEKND

Author and podcaster Dalton Higgins has dubbed this exciting University course, Deconstructing Drake & The Weeknd and he will be teaching it. The course will be available to students in January 2022, which marks the winter semester at Ryerson University. The course will be offered as a flagship course for The Creative School’s Bachelor of Arts music program.

One of the main aims of the course is to deconstruct Drake and The Weeknd’s lyrics. Dalton Higgins noted that their impact on music has been incredible.

“On the U.S college and university scene there are all kinds of courses being taught about rock, folk, pop artists like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, why shouldn’t there be a course about Drake and The Weeknd right here in Toronto?

Dalton Higgins is the right man to teach the course to the Ryerson University students. He has written six books including Drake’s biography Far From Over: The Music and Life of Drake. He has also contributed to over 500 multi-disciplinary productions in the United States.

Speaking to CNN, Higgins shared that people tend to forget that Drake is an impeccable writer.

“In his rhymes he employs all kinds of literary devices like metaphors, iambic pentameter, similes, so we’re going to deconstruct his lyrics and examine how he puts his songs together.”

Higgins says there is a lot to learn from both Drake and The Weeknd and his biggest hope is for students to leave the classroom asking tough questions about life, race and music.

“When you have these two Black Canadian artists from Toronto who are performing rap, R&B and pop, and are arguably on their way to becoming billionaires at some point in the future there is a lot to learn from them.”

DRAKE AND THE WEEKND’S IMPACT ON MUSIC

Drake’s debut album Thank Me Later earned him the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Since then Drake’s albums have done incredibly well all over the world. His latest album, Certified Lover Boy raked in 430 million streams in the first three days of its release. Throughout his career, he has won four Grammy awards.

The Weeknd officially kicked off his career in 2009 by uploading music to YouTube and quickly gained a following. He released his debut mixtape House of Balloons in 2011 and has since performed at major events such as Coachella, the Superbowl and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2015.

Although he has won three Grammy awards, he has decided to no longer submit music to the Grammys after not being recognised for this year’s awards. In a statement he said: “I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated.”
