Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd released his fifth studio album, Dawn FM, on 7 January. Shortly after the album’s release, it topped charts in 10 countries including Sweden and New Zealand.

According to Billboard, the album still has room to grow with vinyl and CD releases on the way.

‘DAWN FM’ TOPS THE CHARTS

The Weeknd’s 16-track album Dawn FM comes after his powerful 2020 After Hours album. Dawn FM  has solid features with appearances from supergroup Swedish House Mafia, Quincy Jones, Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne. Star comedian Jim Carrey also delivers a poem on the 16th track.

According to Billboard, Dawn FM topped the charts in 10 countries around the world. The Weeknd scored a No 1 album position in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The publication further notes that The Weeknd has vinyl and CD releases planned and has “a lot of room to grow”.

Dawn FM marks The Weekend’s second top 10 album on Billboard’s top 200 United States (US) charts. The 31-year-old musician shared on Instagram that his album has achieved over half a billion streams.

‘PHANTOM REGRET BY JIM’

While the other features on Dawn FM stand out significantly, it was Jim Carrey’s feature on Phantom Regret by Jim that stole the show. The dark electronic sounds carry Jim Carrey’s poetry beautifully.

The Canadian-American actor also honoured iconic musician Prince in his poem. Carrey makes a reference to the late musician’s timeless track Purple Rain

“If pain’s living on when your body’s long gone and your phantom regret hasn’t let it go yet, you may not have died in the way that you must,” says a calm Carrey.

“All specters are haunted by their own lack of trust. When you’re all out of time, there’s nothing but space. No hunting, no gathering, no nations, no race. And heaven is closer than those tears on your face. When the purple rain falls, we are all bathed in its grace.”

A TRILOGY ON THE WAY?

On 10 January, The Weekend told his millions of Twitter followers that Dawn FM would be a part of a trilogy.

In his tweet, the musician wrote: “I wonder… Did you know you’re experiencing a new trilogy?”

Some fans believe that Dawn FM is a sequel to the Take My Breath hitmaker’s 2020 album After Hours

One tweep wrote: “Hope the last album is as strong as the first two then.”
