‘Scorpion Kings Live’: Amapiano stars perform classics for sold-out crowd

DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, better known as power duo, Scorpion Kings, performed their classic hits at the SunBet Arena on 22 July.

Scorpion Kings Live…A carefully crafted amapiano show with two of Mzansi’s biggest stars at the fore. Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa performed to a sold-out audience at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on Friday 22 July and it was nothing short of spectacular. The two amapiano giants shared the stage with some of the country’s top musicians, who have also collaborated with the stars.

KABZA DE SMALL AND DJ MAPHORISA’S ‘SCORPION KINGS LIVE’ 

The 2020 Scorpion Kings Live concert was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa promised fans that the concert would take place once it was safe for concert-goers to return to live events. 

The Scorpion Kings Live amapiano show opened with the Scorpion Kings performing their much-loved hit, Hello, from their 2020 album. Maphorisa’s alter-ego, Madumane, welcomed the audience with his soothing vocals and the show was underway!

The audience roared as award-winning songstress Msaki hit the stage to perform Mntakababa and Khusela from Kabza De Small’s latest album, King of Amapiano II

Ami Faku hit the stage next and wowed the crowd with Abalele and Asibe Happy, two collaborations released in 2021. 

SHOWSTOPPING PERFORMANCES FROM NJELIC AND DALIWONGA

In the past two years, Njelic and Daliwonga have risen to become two of Mzansi’s top amapiano vocalists. Njelic hit the stage with the Scorpion Kings and surprised the crowd with a few classics including the 2019 hit Shesha Geza

The energetic singer also performed Nana Thula, a track from Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa’s classic Piano Hub album. 

Daliwonga closed the Scorpion Kings Live show with Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, bringing his undeniable energy to the stage. The musicians closed the show with a performance of Izolo and the crowd went wild as Madumane stunned with his exceptional rap skills. 

The Scorpion Kings Live show was proof that amapiano has become South Africa’s “sound of freedom”. The genre has certainly had a major impact on the local music scene.

HIGH PRAISE FOR SCORPION KINGS 

After an incredible evening of amapiano, concert-goers have taken to Twitter to praise the Scorpion Kings for their live show. 

“You just had to be there,” wrote one tweep. 

“Last night was just epic. Thank you Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa,” wrote another tweep. 

“Looking at the Scorpion Kings videos at Sun Arena makes me believe that my dreams and visions are valid. Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, you once again reassured us that it’s possible if we believe!”
