‘Full circle’: The Soil and Samthing Soweto reunite for special performance

After award-winning acapella group The Soil released their self-titled album in 2011, singer Samthing Soweto parted ways with them to kick off his solo career. Almost a decade later, the Akanamali hitmaker reunited with The Soil for a special performance on Sunday 10 July. Clips of the heartwarming moment were shared on social media and The Soil instantly shot to the top of Twitter’s trending list.

WHY DID SAMTHING SOWETO LEAVE THE SOIL? 

Samthing Soweto, Buhlebendalo Nda and brothers Ntsika and Luphindo Ngxanga founded The Soil in 2003. The group released their platinum-selling debut album in 2011 and shortly after, Samthing Soweto left the group. 

As per TshisaLive, Samthing Soweto left The Soil due to a contractual dispute but he admitted that he regretted leaving. 

“I was young, I didn’t know better. I wanted to do everything at the same time and I admit I was wrong. I regret leaving The Soil but I’m happy they’re doing well.”

SAMTHING SOWETO AND THE SOIL REUNITE 

The Soil performed at Bundu The Village in Cosmo City, Johannesburg on 10 July. To everyone’s surprise, the group was joined by Samthing Soweto for a special performance. 

Together they performed Malibongwe, a much-loved gospel song in Mzansi and Baninzi, a track from The Soil’s 2011 album. 

The clips were shared by tweeps who attended The Soil’s performance in Johannesburg.

TWEEPS REACT TO HEARTWARMING PERFORMANCE 

After the clips were shared on Twitter, Mzansi music lovers were left in high spirits and thanked The Soil and Samthing Soweto for the performance. 

“This is so beautiful! Thank you guys so much for this, so should we get our hopes up for their appearance at your shows?” wrote one tweep. 

“I can imagine how special this might have been for them. And they’re all doing well individually. Such a full circle moment. Beautiful,” wrote another tweep. 

“Destiny fulfilled! They’re all grown so much as artists I hope they work on the next project whether its on Samkelo’s album or as The Soil.”
