‘Legends never die’: BET Hip Hop Awards set to honour Riky Rick

Late rapper Riky Rick will be honoured with the inaugural Global Visionary Award at the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta on 30 September.

Since his untimely passing in February, South Africans are still remembering rapper Riky Rick as a pioneer and as someone who contributed plenty to the local hip-hop scene. The Boss Zonke hitmaker is set to be honoured with the Global Visionary Award at the BET Hip Hop Awards on Friday 30 September. The rapper passed away on 23 February after taking his own life at his Johannesburg home.

RIKY RICK TO RECEIVE POSTHUMOUS BET HIP HOP AWARD

Taking to Twitter on Friday 23 September, BET Africa announced that they would be honouring hip-hop star Riky Rick with the Global Visionary Award at the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta on 30 September. 

As per IOL, the inaugural award recognises artists who have made an exceptional contribution to grow the hip-hop genre. Riky Rick will be the first recipient of the award. 

“He pioneered the independent music wave in SA. His independent ventures achieved much success and inspired other artists to explore a similar path,” said BET. 

TWEEPS REACT TO RIKY RICK’S SPECIAL HONOUR

Reacting to the news, tweeps were happy that Riky Rick would be honoured with a posthumous BET Hip Hop Award. Some felt that the late rapper should’ve been honoured while he was still alive. 

“This is amazing, Riky was an amazing artist himself,” wrote one tweep.”

“I wish he was honoured while he was still here,” wrote another tweep. 

“Legends never die, we multiply.”

MORE MZANSI REPRESENTATION AT THE BET HIP HOP AWARDS 

Local rappers Blxckie and Nadia Nakai will be flying the flag high at the BET Hip Hop Awards. The two hip-hop stars have been nominated for Best International Flow alongside the likes of UK’s Central Cee and Ghana’s Blxck Sheriff.
