‘We did not expect to win’: Q Twins shine bright at SATMA Awards [listen]

Former ‘Idols SA’ contestants Virginia and Viggy Qwabe aka the Q Twins won two awards at the SATMA Awards on Saturday 27 November.

The 16th annual South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (SATMA) took place on Saturday 27 November at the SATMA Dome in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. Virginia and Viggy Qwabe aka the Q Twins were the big winners of the evening walking away with two awards.

Q TWINS WIN BIG AT SATMA AWARDS

Although they could not attend the SATMA Awards due to their busy schedule, the Q Twins celebrate two major awards from the evening. They walked away with Best Female Group and Best Traditional Collaboration Song for their song Laba Bantu featuring DJ Tira and Ntencane. 

Speaking to SowetanLive, the talented singers were ecstatic over their SATMA win noting that these are the first music awards.

“Yes, we were pushing our fans to vote and we were also voting but we did not expect to win. We are very excited that we won the two awards.”

“These are our first awards of the industry and they mean a lot. What makes them even more special is that they were accepted by our father who represented us at the event.”

KHUZANI MPUNGOSE CELEBRATES HONORARY AWARD 

Khuzani Mpungose is one of South Africa’s top maskandi artists with six albums and several awards to his name. The 31-year-old musician was awarded the Honorary Award at the SATMA Awards. Speaking to Sowetan Live, he said history was made when he was honoured with the award. 

“This means a lot to me and I feel honoured. I never thought maskandi music could put me where I am right now. This new award will add to a list of awards that I have received because of maskandi music. I want to thank the whole country for supporting me. I am nothing without you.”

Mpungose won the award for his single Ijele that has achieved over 2.8 million YouTube views.
