Limpopo-born musician Makhadzi has been accused of “stealing” her popular track MaGear from a Malawian artist. The track rose to popularity on TikTok before it was officially released on Friday 24 June. Fans of the SAMA-nominated singer have stepped in to defend her after the bold accusation.

MAKHADZI’S ‘MAGEAR’ OR SCRAFOC’S?
Taking to Twitter on Sunday 19 June, Twitter user @JanVanPotgieter claimed that Makhadzi stole Scrafoc’s song Ma Gear which was released in June 2021.
“The song actually made a buzz in Malawi and got a bit of clout since he is an upcoming artist,” wrote the tweep.
Makhadzi’s song, with the same name, was first teased on TikTok in June 2022 and it has sparked 35 000 videos on the video-sharing app.

Reacting to the accusations, some tweeps highlighted that the songs don’t sound similar.
“These songs aren’t even similar…It’s like when Faith Evans say ‘I love you’ and Mary J Blige sings ‘I love you’… Different time and all. Scrafoc far away and leave our Khadzi alone!” wrote one tweep.
“Does this guy now know that South Africans have been using the term ‘change Magear’ for ages and it’s been in many songs? If he stalls Makhadazi stole it from other SA artists,” wrote another tweep.
“Stole because of the phrase ‘changer ma gear’? Lmaoo pls that phrase has been there since.”
“He is looking for relevance.”

MAKHADZI’S FIRST SAMA NOMINATION
After she was snubbed at the South African Music Awards (Samas) in 2021, Makhadzi has bagged three nominations for the 28th annual Samas this year.
She is nominated for the Sampra Artist of the Year, Music Video of the Year for Ghanama featuring Prince Benza and Best Collaboration for Zwivhuya featuring Jon Dellinger.
The Samas are set to take place on 31 July 2022.
