Kelly Khumalo has risen to become one of Mzansi’s most successful singers. The Sama-nominated singer has dabbled in the gospel genre but has made it clear that she does not consider herself a gospel artist.

Ahead of her upcoming concert Gospel Explosion, Khumalo told Sowetan that hosting the concert is a “full circle” moment for her. She is set to perform alongside industry mates and close friends, Ayanda Ntanzi and Takie Ndlovu.

KELLY KHUMALO’S ‘GOSPEL EXPLOSION’

Kelly Khumalo’s Gospel Explosion is set to take place on Friday 15 April and Saturday 16 April at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. Khumalo, who describes herself as a “soul singer”, says the staging of the show is a significant moment in her career.

“To do exactly what discovered me and be able to bring along my fans and friends on this journey is something that every artist looks forward to doing.”

On the release of her single Esiphambanweni, featuring gospel giant Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Kelly Khumalo said it landed her in “hot water” because her fans hoped she would go into gospel music full time.

“The truth is that I am not a gospel artist. I don’t need to be one to sing gospel.”

Taking to Instagram, Kelly Khumalo said Gospel Explosion is the first of many other concerts to come.
