BIG GRAMMY WINS FOR SA

Over the past weekend, the world’s biggest music stars gathered at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to celebrate the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

South Africans waited with bated breath to see local winners Zakes Bantwini, Nomcebo Zikode, and Wouter Kellerman bag a Grammy for their smash collaboration. Their hit single Bayethe won the award for Best Global Performance.

Fans set Twitter alight with messages of congratulations after their win. Especially since it was reported that South Africa is the African country with the most Grammys under its belt.

“It’s how diverse South African music is for me,” another Tweep commented.

“South Africa has musicians who, despite having never won a Grammy, are my favourites. Chicco, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, Brenda Fassie, and the people’s poet Mzwakhe Mbuli. Love from Uganda!” a Tweep from Uganda says.

Previous local Grammy winners include:

  • Black Coffee (1 Grammy)
  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo (5 Grammys)
  • Miriam Makeba (1 Grammy)
  • Soweto Gospel Choir (3 Grammys)
  • Wouter Kellerman (2 Grammys – one Grammy is with Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode)

DOJA CAT: HONORARY SOUTH AFRICAN?

With local music stars raking in the Grammys year after year, South Africans are more proud than ever. In fact Mzansi boast the most Grammy wins in Africa.

But Twitter is now also claiming US rapper Doja Cat’s 2022 Grammy win as proudly South African, as her father is from SA. She won the Grammy along with SZA for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their collaborative hit “Kiss Me More“.
