SA hip-hop DJ, Citi Lyts was allegedly shot and killed in the early hours of Monday 14 February in Dube, Soweto during a hijacking

Over the years, Citi Lyts had worked with some of the brightest rappers and produced some of the biggest hip-hop songs. Here are five songs by the slain hip-hop DJ you should know.

1. ‘SHISHILIZA’ FEATURING KRAIZIE AND SJAVA

Shishiliza is one of the few songs DJ Citi Lyts released while he was signed to Ambitiouz Entertainment. The 2016 hip-hop banger is also one of the few songs where afro-soul artist Sjava trades in his smooth vocals for some hard bars.

2. ‘VURA’ FEATURING SJAVA AND SAUDI 

If you ask any local hip-hop fans what the best songs of 2016 were, they’ll probably tell you about DJ Citi Lyts’s Vura featuring Sjava and Saudi.  The song also made OkayAfrica’s 30 best songs by SA hip-hop DJs.

3. ‘WASHA’ FEATURING FIFI COOPER, EMTEE AND B3NCHMARQ 

In 2016, Fifi Cooper, Emtee and rap duo B3nchMarQ were three of SA hip-hop’s biggest acts. They all delivered quality bars on DJ Citi Lyts’s Washa. Since its release, the music video of the track has achieved over two million views on YouTube.

4. ‘MALAMBANE’ FEATURING S’VILLA, BLAQ DIAMOND, KID TINI, EMTEE AND LASAUCE

Malambane is one of DJ Citi Lyts’ slowed-down hip-hop tracks. The single, released in 2018, featured Kid Tini, Emtee and vocalists S’Villa and LaSauce. 

According to JustNje, there were claims that DJ Citi Lyts had stolen the song. Citi Lyts set the record straight on YFM’s Hip Hop Floor radio show and said the song was his own.

5. ‘EK SE’ – KING SWEETKID 

Ek Se is a collaboration between rapper King Sweetkid and DJ Citi Lyts. The song, released in April 2021, is one of DJ Citi Lyts’s last songs as a hip-hop DJ. The high-energy track puts King Sweetkid’s hot bars in the spotlight.
