Splitsville: Tommy Dorfman’s husband Peter Zurkuhlen files for divorce

Tommy Dorfman ‘reintroduced’ herself as transgender in 2021, highlighting that her relationship with Peter Zurkuhlen had been ‘redefined’.

Tommy Dorfman came out as a transgender woman in 2021 and said that the types of romantic relationships she sought after were different. On her husband Peter Zurkuhlen, Dorfman mentioned that the two had “redefined” their relationship to friends.

According to People, Zurkuhlen filed for divorce at the Los Angeles court on Tuesday 1 February.

TOMMY DORFMAN AND PETER ZURKUHLEN’S RELATIONSHIP 

According to TMZ, the 13 Reasons Why actress and her husband Peter were introduced to each other by a mutual friend in 2005. They got engaged in April 2015 and tied the knot in November 2016 in Portland, Maine. 

In her Time interview in 2021, Tommy Dorfman mentioned that since coming out as transgender, there has been a shift in the types of relationships she seeks.

Speaking on her marriage with Peter she said they have “redefined” their relationship to friends. 

“I love him so much, but we’ve been learning that as a trans woman, what I’m interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man.”

PETER ZURKUHLEN FILES FOR DIVORCE

As per People, Peter Zurkuhlen filed for divorce at the Los Angeles court on Tuesday 1 February. The publication confirmed that they had seen the court records. Their divorce comes after five years of marriage. 

The publication notes that 33-year-old Zurkuhlen expressed support for Tommy Dorfman’s transition by reposting an image from her Time cover shoot. 

The caption read: “Proud of you T,” with a purple heart emoji.”

TOMMY DORFMAN’S TRANSITION

In her interview with Time, Dorfman said she wasn’t “coming out”, instead she was “reintroducing” herself. 

“Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman.”

The 29-year-old actress said they were not changing their name because they felt connected to it. 

“I’m named after my mom’s brother who passed a month after I was born.”
