In a new DC Comic scheduled for release in November, Superman aka Jon Kent will come out as bisexual! The announcement was made on National Coming Out Day (Monday 11 October) in the United States. This comes two months after Batman’s sidekick Robin, came out as bisexual and revealed he was open to exploring his sexuality.

‘A NEW SUPERMAN HAD TO HAVE NEW FIGHTS’

Jonathan Kent aka Jon Kent is the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The comic series Superman: Son of Kal-El kicked off in July and Jon has been on several missions including protesting the deportation of refugees, tackling wildfires and attempting to stop a high school shooting.

“[A] new Superman had to have new fights – real-world problems – that he could stand up to as one of the most powerful people in the world,” said Tom Taylor, the series writer.

Superman: Son of Kal-El sees Jon Kent struggling with the pressure of being the world’s new Superman. Nakamura (who appeared in the series’ third issue) was a shoulder for Superman to lean on.

SUPERMAN’S NEW QUEER ROMANCE

Although the full plot of the upcoming comic is unclear, Jon Kent falls for Nakamura after mentally and physically burning out.

DC Superman shared a picture of Jon Kent and Nakamura about to share an intimate kiss. The image was captioned: “Just like his father before him, Jon Kent has fallen for a reporter.”

“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros share this idea,” said Tom Taylor.

‘PROGRESS IS BEING MADE HERE’

“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics,” said Tom Taylor.

American writer and podcaster Glen Weldon noted that having characters like a bisexual Superman and a queer Robin and Aquaman are signs of progress.

“Progress is being made here, it’s just a much smaller and more incremental species of progress than DC Comics’ press releases, and much more of the ensuing coverage is suggesting.”

The Superman: Son of Kal-El comic is set to be released on Tuesday 9 November.
