WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR BRANDS TO CELEBRATE PRIDE MONTH?

Pride Month is a moment where South African brands should come together to celebrate how far the LGBTQI+ community has come. It is important for local brands to celebrate Pride Month for several reasons.

South Africa was the first country in the world to prohibit unfair discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. We are also the first country in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage. Although South Africa has come far, many LGBTQI+ people across the country are still discriminated against and visibility is important.

Shaun Frazao writes: “Regardless of whether some brands are simply jumping at the opportunity to commercialise this month, we have to remember that 10 years ago, it would’ve been financial death for any brand to do so. That’s progress, whether you agree with it or not.”

GALAXY & CO PARTNER WITH THE TRIANGLE PROJECT

One of South Africa’s most popular jewellery brands, Galaxy & Co has partnered with the Triangle Project, a non-profit human rights organisation that offers professional services to ensure the full realisation of constitutional and human rights for LGBTQI+ people. The Triangle Project’s main services are counselling, sexual health clinical care, support groups and a helpline.

Galaxy & Co launched a limited edition tote bag with their logo printed in rainbow colours. All the proceeds from the tote bag will be going towards the Triangle Project. Speaking to IOL, The Fashion Group’s Jewellery Marketing Manager Naeema Cassimjee says ‘your style, your way’ goes beyond jewellery curation.

“It is for that reason that we have chosen to lend our support to The Triangle Project to assist with their pioneering work within the LGBTQI+ community, and pave the way towards absolute equality and authentic self-expression.”
