Hofmeyr hate speech case: Settlement talks FAIL
The Steve Hofmeyr hate speech case has been postponed to next year by the Gqeberha High Court, sitting as an Equality Court.

The Steve Hofmeyr hate speech case has been postponed to next year by the Gqeberha High Court, sitting as an Equality Court.
The controversial singer was taken to court by the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) over his April social media statements that the LGBTQIA+ acronym includes the acceptance of bestiality and that the LGBTQIA+ community is in support of “grooming” children.
The matter was heard by the Presiding Officer, Judge Makaula, on 3 November for a directions hearing. It’s been reported that efforts to come to a settlement failed and, as a result, the case will return to court on 16 February 2023.
Judge Makaula is then expected to deal with several preliminary issues. These include an application by OUT LGBT Well-being filed on 28 October to join the court proceedings as a complainant in the matter

The SAHRC wants Hofmeyr to issue a full public apology for his comments, donate R500 000 to an LGBTQIA+ organisation and do community service.
The commission said it aimed to underscore “the importance of promoting and protecting the rights of all LGBTQIA+ and of gender non-confirming persons.”
Hofmeyr has continued to lash out at the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly its transgender members. “It sounds to me that the LGBTQIA+ community should just go and look in the mirror again as to why the T in LGBTQ plus makes you look so ridiculous,” said Hofmeyr in September.
In 2019, Hofmeyr slammed South African-born actress Charlize Theron’s decision to accept her daughter’s transgender identity.
