In July 2021, Lehlogonolo Machaba made history as the first transgender woman to make the Miss South African top 30. Sadly, the LGBTQI+ activist and model lost out on a top 10 spot, but she is back and ready for another shot at the crown. On Monday 16 May, Machaba was announced as one of 30 women vying for the Miss South Africa 2022 crown.

LEHLOGONOLO MACHABA ON MISS SOUTH AFRICA

Lehlogonolo Machaba hails from Oskraal in the North West. The 25-year-old has a National Diploma in Fashion from the Tshwane University of Technology.

She describes herself as a trans woman who enjoys being her truest self and is passionate about advocating for the true definition of authenticity.

Speaking to TrueLove in June 2021 about entering Miss South Africa she said it was time someone creates awareness about issues that deeply affect the LGBTQI+ community.

“Through the Miss SA platform, I’ll be able to advocate for the LGBTQI+ community. Maybe that way we can educate people and create awareness which will hopefully reduce the number of killings significantly since people will understand us better,” said Machaba.

RETURNING TO MISS SOUTH AFRICA

Taking to Instagram on Monday 16 May, Machaba said she didn’t plan on entering the Miss South Africa 2022 pageant again.

“But a force bigger than me wants to fulfil what I was called for here on Earth, which I believe is changing the narratives for everyone who doesn’t fit in the perfect world,” she wrote.

“I am imperfect but through me embracing my imperfections and strength, I am now aligned to my purpose.”
