Feathers and drag queens: Colourful events lined up for SA Pride Month

October is Pride Month in South Africa! Take a look at some events lined up for the next few weeks, including a superstar performance by a ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ winner!

So far, there are a few colourful events lined up for South African Pride Month and the calendar is filling up fast! After a significant start to Pride Month at Constitutional Hill on Friday 1 October, here are some events taking place in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town to mark on your Pride Month calendar.

PRETORIA 

Babylon Club Launch

Pretoria nightclub Babylon closed in June 2017 with Bruce Walker, creator of the club noting that the rental was far too expensive. Fortunately for LGBTQI+ party goers, Babylon is back and the club is making a bold return! The Babylon launch will be at the Parkview Shopping Centre in Pretoria East on 9 October.

Tickets to the event are limited and there will be indoor and outdoor entertainment areas. 

The event kicks off at 14:00 and tickets are R80.

Pretoria Pride 

Although Pretoria Pride is only in December it is still an important event to mark on the Pride Month calendar. This year marks the 7th Pretoria Pride and it will take place on 4 December. More details are yet to be confirmed for the event. 

Tickets are R50 for general entry and R150 for VIP. 

JOHANNESBURG 

‘House of Pink Vol. 1’

The Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg is turning pink in a drag extravaganza with some of South Africa’s best drag queens. The theatre production House of Pink Vol. 1 will feature Kitana Klitorus, Donovan Yaards, Ms Diving Fabuous and Shenay O’Brien. 

The show directed by Lebohang Toko will kick off on 8 October and end on 10 October.

Trinity the Tuck at The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

American-based drag queen Trinity “The Tuck” Taylor is coming to South Africa and she will be performing at Babylon in Illovo, Sandton. The RuPaul’s Drag Race star won the ninth season of the show and will be performing on 22 October. 

There will also be performances by local drag queens. 

Tickets are R380. 

Johannesburg Pride  

The Johannesburg LGBQTI+ community always looks forward to the Johannesburg pride event but unfortunately due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be a digital event on 30 October. 

More details are yet to be announced.

CAPE TOWN 

Trinity The Tuck at Harringtons Cocktail Lounge

Trinity “The Tuck” Taylor who also won season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars will be at the Harringtons Cocktail Lounge in Zonnebloem, Cape Town on 29 October. 

She will also be hosting a brunch at Cafe Caprice on 30 October.
